Yews Estate
This delightful 7-acre garden has undergone significant redevelopment since 2018 by the current owners, Emma and Christopher Scott.
The gardens wrap around a wonderful 17th and 18th century gentleman’s residence which now incorporates several converted farm buildings. This is also superbly restored and is colour-washed in pale pink – one of the traditional building colours of Cumbria. The unusual round chimneys, which are found mainly in central Lake District, rise from a square stack made from small pieces of limestone which are not suitable for building corners. The house and garden have views over Windermere in the distance.
The formal gardens were developed by two of the most notable Arts & Crafts garden designers, Thomas Mawson and, later, Henry Avray Tipping. They incorporate many typical features of the Arts & Craft style including divided compartments with sculpted yew hedging, topiary birds and animals, lush planting and wild areas.
The garden close to the house includes beautifully planted sunken borders, a rose garden and a croquet lawn. Further away are a newly planted woodland walk, bog garden and renovated yew maze. Naturalistic planting areas are left for wildlife and many fine trees have been added recently. Mr Scott is a keen dendrologist. A new kitchen garden was built in 2022 around the original Messenger Glasshouse.
