Wyken Hall Gardens

Wyken Hall Garden spans roughly four acres in the grounds of a 16th-century Elizabethan manor in Stanton, Bury St Edmunds.  A series of garden ‘rooms’ framed by hedges, ancient trees, and walled borders have been carefully designed and developed since the late 1970s by Sir Kenneth and Lady Carlisle, with contributions from renowned designer Arabella Lennox‑Boyd.

On entering the garden, symmetrical and interlocking topiary circles are revealed and are a clear nod to Gertrude Jekyll’s early 20th-century designs.  To the north, there is a productive orchard and kitchen garden that dates back to the 18th century, and its vegetables, fruits and herbs supply the estate’s café and restaurant. On the eastern side, a coherent suite of gardens—rose, knot, and herb gardens—added under Lennox‑Boyd’s direction, are divided by hedged walls and include historic roses, box, and herbaceous planting.

Anchoring the garden is a quincunx fountain—a modern ceramic piece at its heart—and espaliered apples, which artfully combine form and tradition. The garden’s flora parade begins with spring bulbs and orchard blossoms in April, peaks with roses and herbaceous blooms in June, and culminates in the dramatic Red Hot Border that is ablaze with crocosmias, rudbeckias, dahlias, heleniums, tithonia, and zinnias throughout the summer months and continues into autumn.  When walking through a nuttery of nut-bearing trees and woodland plants, you enter a charming gazebo garden and the ‘Heaven’s Maze’ which is formed from copper beech and hornbeam. Beyond this area lies the wild garden, featuring cowslips, fritillaries, yellow rattle, and a silver birch-planted dell.
