Bonython Estate Gardens

Bonython garden surrounds a quintessential Cornish Manor House, close to the sea on the Lizard Peninsula. The Manor faces the prevailing south-west winds and is extremely exposed but the estate has tranquil open views across farmland to the sea beyond.

Sue and Richard Nathan purchased the property in 1999 and have since transformed the estate into a triumphant series of distinct garden areas which have been described in Pevsner’s Architectural Guides as ‘exceptionally elegant’.

Behind the delightful Georgian house there is a contemporary water feature giving calming reflections of the sky. There is an 18th century walled garden with colour themed herbaceous borders, a traditional potager garden and an orchard of Cornish variety apple trees.

Beyond is the extensive parkland with a series of small lakes and a stream cascade in a sheltered valley. Each lake has a different atmosphere and planting. The first is tranquil with specimen trees and shrubs reflected in the water. The second is vibrant from the hot, South African summer garden, and the third mysterious with its cool, ghostly quarry lake with creeper clad cliffs, fernery and surrounding bamboos. The gardens are particularly magnificent in spring with traditional Cornish rhododendrons, azaleas, woodland flowers and bulbs.
