Tuesday 18th May
Today we enjoy a prestigious ‘members-only’ day at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, a highlight every time this world class show is in our itinerary. Marvel at the magnificent floral displays proudly presented by the best nurseries and specialist growers in the main pavilion. Be inspired by the extraordinary show gardens created by the leading lights in horticulture and see the ‘Fresh Gardens’ designed by emerging talent. There is a plethora of high-quality garden tools and gadgets, artifacts and sculptures and innovative products for your garden in the retail spaces at this classic event close to London’s fashionable shopping. Wednesday 19th May
Today we head north to the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and en-route visit Asthall Manor, one of the prettiest gardens in the Cotswolds. The Jacobean manor, which was once the childhood home of the Mitford sisters, is surrounded by spectacular gardens that flow into the idyllic Windrush Valley landscape.
We then make a visit to the famous Barnsley House for lunch (included) and to see the gardens created by the late Rosemary Verey. Now a luxury boutique hotel, the gardens have been beautifully maintained. We meet a member of the gardening team for an introductory talk. We continue onto the delightful Cotswolds market town of Broadway and check into the 4-star Lygon Arms Hotel. Your evening is at leisure to enjoy one of the local eateries.
Thursday 20th May
We begin today with a visit to Bourton House Garden. This privately owned garden is inspirational with colour combinations, superb topiary and exotic plants. We return to Broadway for lunch (independent) and time to visit the museums, galleries and and shops. In the afternoon we visit Kiftsgate Court Gardens, a delightfully laid out garden on top of a hill with magnificent views over the Vale of Evesham. The garden is the creation of three generations of women gardeners.
We conclude our day with an exclusive visit to the famous Hidcote Manor Garden. Here we will be treated to a private dinner (included) and access to the gardens once the crowds of the day have gone. Major Lawrence Johnston is claimed to have been the originator here of the ‘garden room’. It is exciting to see this first example in its original form with his skillful use of flowers, shrubs and trees.
Friday 21st May
Today we visit two of the Cotswold’s most exciting private gardens. Firstly we pay a visit to Thenford Arboretum and Gardens, which has been carefully developed with a dazzling array of specimen trees and now covers over 70 acres. The formal gardens feature herbaceous borders, a rose garden, walled garden, rill and medieval fishponds.
Afterwards we visit Broughton Grange Gardens. The gardens are beautifully set in 350 acres of parkland, farmland and open meadow, with planting that owes its origins to the Victorian era. However it is in the past twenty years that the garden rooms, designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, have been created and now represent one of the most significant private contemporary gardens in Britain. We have a light lunch here (included) and a guided gardens tour. We return to the hotel for our final night dinner (included).
Saturday 22nd May
We end the tour with a visit to the World Heritage Site of Blenheim Palace – the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. It is a monumental and historic palace with fabulous formal gardens and ‘Capability Brown’ landscape grounds stretching over 2,000 acres. There is time to visit the palace, explore the formal and landscape gardens and have lunch (independent).
