Drum Castle

Drum Castle combines a mediaeval keep, a Jacobean mansion house and a Victorian extension, all in a parkland setting in Royal Deeside in Scotland. For nearly all its seven centuries it was the home of one family, the Irvines. The story of the castle and family is packed with historical incident and personal drama.
The Garden of Historic Roses was established at the castle in 1991 by the National Trust for Scotland to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee. Representations of four centuries have been laid out as quadrants in the old walled kitchen garden of the castle, which is out of sight, a short walk from the castle itself. The seventeenth century is represented by a knot-cum-herb garden, the eighteenth century by a formal pattern of allées, shrubberies and topiary, and informal plantings represent the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While roses predominate, these are complimented by other plantings of an appropriate period style.
